How to Choose an Outdoor Video Security System
Finding the right intelligent video solution for securing outdoor environments can be a challenge. Moving foliage, reflections, wind, clouds, rain — even ripples in water can trigger nuisance alarms, or worse, trick the video analytics to miss actual security violations. All of these problems become magnified when attempting to detect targets that vary greatly in size across large fields of view.
Unlike indoor video systems, which are designed to operate in static environments, outdoor video analytics must contend with an environment that is constantly changing. Consider the typical outdoor surveillance scene: Cameras are mounted high on poles which shake from even a slight wind or vibration. Clouds are moving across the sky, creating shadows on the ground that appear to the camera as moving objects. Trees and their leaves flap in the breeze, further creating the appearance of moving objects. When you add in snow, rain, humidity and dust, such a dynamic environment will wreak havoc for video analytics not intended to operate under such conditions.
Challenges or not, security customers still need to be alerted in real-time of possible intrusions happening anywhere over a wide area, and they need to be able to trust the validity of an alarm when one occurs. The answer is to deploy intelligent video systems that are specifically designed to accurately detect in a wide range of outdoor environments, while addressing the core issue of nuisance alarms. The good news is that they are also surprisingly affordable.
